Overview of VA Benefits

VA Benefits Overview

Various benefits may be available to Veterans and their families through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs ("VA"). Unfortunately, many veterans have no idea about the benefits they are entitled to receive in exchange for the services they gave and the sacrifices they made in defense of our country.

Sackett and Herrera can help you by clarifying the criteria for eligibility, explaining the process, and obtaining your benefits.

Presumptive Claims

Presumptive Disability Claims

When veterans with similar experiences have higher rates of certain types of illnesses, the federal government may create a presumptive for that illness. By doing so, they "presume" that the illness was caused by the military service. This is considered a "presumptive" disability claim.

Below are the categories of veterans who have presumptive disabilities established:

  • Recent Separatees
  • Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange
  • Former Prisoners of War
  • Gulf War Illness
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease

Injuries / Conditions

Injuries / Conditions

Disability Compensation is for veterans who have conditions that were caused or aggravated by their service in the military. These conditions cover various physical injuries and emotional conditions.

For example, have you felt anxious ever since going on patrol in hostile territory? Has your knee bothered you ever since you twisted it at boot camp? Have you noticed your ears ringing after serving in a combat zone?

The bottom line: If you have a current physical or mental condition, and it is related to your military service, then apply for Disability Compensation. Even if the condition seems minor now, you should not wait to apply. We can help you!
